AI-Driven Precision Spraying Enables Safer Use of Non-Selective Herbicides

Ecorobotix demonstrated major advances in its Plant-by-Plant™ AI spraying technology at Agritechnica 2025, showing how artificial intelligence was continuing to transform sustainable crop management. The company, known for its ultra-high-precision application systems, expanded its library of crop-specific algorithms to more than 30, giving it one of the most extensive AI-based detection portfolios available in agricultural spraying.

A key development was the system’s ability to apply non-selective contact herbicides with high accuracy while protecting surrounding crops. This world-first capability was made possible by Ecorobotix’s proprietary Safety Zone feature, which automatically created a virtual buffer around each crop plant. This ensured that spray treatments were placed only where required, preventing collateral damage while still targeting even small weeds close to valuable plants.

The ARA sprayer also continued to support precise application of fertilisers, biostimulants and insecticides, delivering treatment within a 6 × 6 cm footprint and reducing inputs by up to 95%.

With regulatory pressure increasing on selective herbicides – including the EU withdrawal of metribuzin, widely used in carrots and potatoes – growers were seeking alternative approaches. Ecorobotix’s precision platform offered a viable route forward, enabling safer integration of contact herbicides without compromising agronomic performance or environmental protection.

According to Simon Gasser, agronomist and crop algorithm product manager at Ecorobotix, more farmers had already begun adopting non-selective contact herbicides using the company’s system, supported by AI-driven recognition and the Safety Zone function. Visitors to Agritechnica were able to see the ARA sprayer on Stand 21H32 and discuss regulatory shifts, AI capabilities and new weed-management strategies with the Ecorobotix team.

Ecorobotix is a Swiss B Corporation® developing AI-based precision technology that treats individual plants with high accuracy, reducing crop-protection inputs by up to 95%. With more than 30 crop algorithms and users in over 20 countries, the company continues to advance sustainable crop protection through data-driven application systems.
